amen break

The amen break has been called the most important sample in the history of music, and '6 seconds that changed music forever'. Originally sampled from the 1969 song 'Amen Brother' recorded by The Winstons. The sample itself is four bars (lasting 5.2 seconds) of a drum solo originally played by G.C. Coleman. The sample gained popularity first among hiphop producers in the lat 1980s, appearing on notable songs such as 'Straight outta compton' by N.W.A and many more. Having crossed the Atlantic in the early 90s, the amen break became popular among rave and hardcore producers, and eventually formed the basis of an entire genre of music: Jungle (or as it was later rechristened 'Drum 'n' Bass').All genres of music that rely on a 'broken beat' (as opposed to the standard 4X4 beat patterns used in other genres) including drum 'n' bass, breakbeat, UK Garage, dubstep etc have the amen break to thank for their existence. The amen break has appeared in thousands of songs and is unofficially recognized as the most often used sample in the history of electronic music.
