The more or less steady diminishing in time or space (or both) of the amplitude of any physical quantity. In the atmosphere, for example, acoustic, hydrodynamic, and electromagnetic waves are damped.
Industry:Weather
Any wave for which the (complex) amplitude decreases in the direction of propagation.
Industry:Weather
The piling up, or complete blocking, of cold air approaching the slopes of a mountain barrier. This produces high pressure along the windward slopes and, when it persists for more than several hours, can also produce a barrier jet.

The total pressure of a mixture of gases is the sum of the pressures each component would have if it alone occupied the volume of the mixture at its temperature. Dalton's law is strictly valid only for hypothetical ideal gases but is a good approximation for atmospheric gases at normal terrestrial temperatures and pressures.
Industry:Weather
Volume of water that can be stored daily in a reservoir between minimum and maximum daily water levels under ordinary operating conditions.
Industry:Weather
Arithmetic difference between daily maximum and daily minimum temperature.
Industry:Weather
Minimum temperature in the course of a continuous time interval of 24 hours (usually midnight to midnight local time).
Industry:Weather
The long-period mean value of a climatic element on a given day of the year. A curve of daily means throughout the year shows the annual variation in much greater detail than a curve based on monthly means, but unless it is based on a long period (at least 50 years) it will probably be dominated by random irregularities. Such long-period daily means might be referred to as “normal daily values. ”
Industry:Weather
A technique for using the radiosonde observation to determine the presence of liquid water droplets in supercooled clouds in saturated or nearly saturated layers of air. For each reported level in the sounding, the negative value of eight times the dewpoint spread (−8D) is plotted on the pseudoadiabatic chart (or equivalent chart). Where the temperature sounding lies to the left of the −8D curve, liquid droplet clouds are considered to be present, and icing is possible on aircraft flying in the cloud layer.
