Localized, sudden increase in surface temperature associated with a thunderstorm, shower, or mesoscale convective system, often accompanied by extreme drying. The temperature jump can be so extreme that it is at times referred to as a “hot blast of air. ” Occurs in association with precipitation-driven downdrafts penetrating a shallow surface stable layer and reaching the ground.
Industry:Weather
A line of equal or constant density. It is equivalent to an isostere.

A hurricane radar band of circular or spiral shape associated with a tropical cyclone (hurricane or typhoon). Made evident by radar observations, hurricane bands typically curve cyclonically inward toward the center of the storm. The bands may be classified as primary if they merge into the eyewall encircling the eye of the storm, or secondary if they are disconnected from the eyewall. Hurricane bands generally move slowly around the center of the storm in the direction of the hurricane circulation. See banded structure.
Industry:Weather
A thickness chart of an atmospheric layer bounded by two selected isentropic surfaces (surfaces of constant potential temperature). The thickness of such a layer is directly proportional to the static instability of that layer; hence, these charts have been called instability charts. Compare isentropic weight chart; see isentropic chart.
Industry:Weather
A storm characterized by a fall of freezing liquid precipitation. The attendant formation of glaze on terrestrial objects creates many hazards.

One of the mechanisms thought to be responsible for secondary ice production, when ice crystal concentrations in clouds well in excess (x 10 000) of the ice nucleus concentration are found. Ice particles are produced in the range of temperature −3° to −8°C (with a maximum at −4°C) as graupel grows by accretion provided the cloud droplet spectrum contains appropriate numbers of droplets smaller than 12 μm and greater than 25 μm. About 50 splinters are produced per milligram of accreted ice.
Industry:Weather
A thick ice formation with a fairly level surface, formed along a polar coast and in shallow bays and inlets, where it is fastened to the shore and often reaches bottom. An ice shelf may grow hundreds of miles out to sea. It is usually an extension of land ice, and the seaward edge floats freely in deep water. The calving of an ice shelf forms tabular icebergs and ice islands.
Industry:Weather
The basic structure of most expert systems. The necessary conditions are introduced by an “IF” keyword, and the consequences, if those conditions are met, by a “THEN” keyword.
