A chart on a polyconic map-projection.
Industry:Earth science
A cylindrical equal area map projection, described by Behrmann in 1910, mapping the sphere onto a cylinder secant at 30o latitude north and south. This map projections has less average maximal angular distortion than any other equal area map projection, according to Behrmann.
Industry:Earth science
A cycle consisting of four reversible operations on a gas: (a) isothermal expansion from volume Va to Vb; adiabatic expansion from volume Vb to Vc; isothermal compression from volume Vc to Vd; adiabatic compression from volume Vd to Va.
Industry:Earth science
The processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Arithmetic is a more general term; it includes calculation and the theory behind calculation.
Industry:Earth science
The color of one of the sets of colored lights used as references and by additive mixtures of which all other colors of the spectrum can be produced. The colors often chosen are red, green, and blue.
Industry:Earth science
An assemblage of three cameras equipped with wide angle, Metrogon lens systems and placed with their optical axes in the same vertical plane; the axis of the central camera is vertical and the axes of the two flanking cameras intersect the axis of the central camera at 60o to provide overlapping fields of view. Trimetrogon cameras are less used since very wide angle lens systems were introduced.
Industry:Earth science
A boundary not limited by a call for a monument. e.g., thence N 12„a E, 120 feet. Thence N 12o E, 120 feet to Brown's south line is not a free boundary.
Industry:Earth science
A circle upon the surface of a sphere specifically, on the surface of a sphere representing the Earth or the heavens. It is called a great circle when its plane passes through the center of the sphere; otherwise, it is called a small circle.
Industry:Earth science
The process of aligning a directional antenna, often by optical means.
Industry:Earth science
A container used for sampling sea water and consisting of a brass cylinder fitted with a plug valve at each end and capable of being reversed in position. The two valves close simultaneously. The cylinder holds about 1200 cc. In use, the bottle is lowered on a wire with the valves open. A weight sliding down the wire is let go from the surface when the bottle has reached depth. The weight, called a messenger, closes the valves and reverses the bottle. There are usually several bottles, fastened at different depths along the wire, so the messenger closes each bottle in succession. The Nansen bottle (also called the Nansen water bottle) is the one most widely used in oceanography. The Ekman bottle has plates seated in rubber gaskets as valves.
