A method of heat transfer by horizontal movement of a fluid. Advection is different from convection in that convection transfers heat by vertical, rather than horizontal, movement of the fluid.
Industry:Aviation
A method of heat transfer in which heat energy is transferred from one body into another when the bodies are in direct contact.
Industry:Aviation
A method of heat transfer within a fluid by means of vertical currents. Heat is absorbed in the bottom layer of the fluid by conduction, and this heat decreases the density of the fluid. The less dense fluid rises and forces the cooler, more dense fluid down.
Industry:Aviation
A method of heat treatment in which a metal is softened so it loses some of its hardness and brittleness. Steel is annealed by heating it to a specified temperature and allowing it to cool very slowly, in an oven. Copper is annealed by heating it red-hot and quenching it in water.
Industry:Aviation
A method of heat treatment of steel in which the surface of the metal is hardened while its inside stays comparatively soft and tough. Case hardening may be done by causing the steel on the surface to absorb extra carbon or by changing the surface into a very hard chemical compound called aluminum nitride. Case hardening is used on such steel parts as engine crankshafts. Only the surfaces where the bearings ride are made very hard and brittle. The inside of the crankshaft remains tough and strong.
Industry:Aviation
A method of heating an electrically conductive material by inducing alternating current into it. The rapidly reversing current causes the material to get hot.
Industry:Aviation
A method of holding a structure together before it is permanently welded. The parts of the structure are cut and fitted together, and each joint is welded with a small spot. When all of the joints fit and line up as they should, the final welding is done.
Industry:Aviation
A method of identifying various locations in a gas turbine engine for ease of describing pressures and temperatures. Station designations are different for different types of turbine engines, and stations can be subdivided using decimal numbers. The following station designations are used for a typical dual-rotor turbofan engine: Station Location AM Ambient conditions ahead of the engine : 1----------------Tip of nose cone : 2----------------Fan or low-pressure compressor inlet : 3----------------High-pressure compressor inlet : 4----------------Combustor inlet : 5----------------High-pressure turbine inlet : 6----------------Low-pressure turbine inlet : 7----------------Turbine discharge : 8----------------Turbine duct discharge : 9----------------Exhaust nozzle discharge
Industry:Aviation
A method of increasing the gain of an amplifier by feeding part of the amplified signal back into its input in phase with the input signal. If too much energy is fed back into the input, the amplifier will oscillate and produce an unwanted signal, often in the form of a whistle, or squeal. Regeneration is also called regenerative feedback or positive feedback.
Industry:Aviation
A method of increasing the hardness of the face of a steel tool to keep it from being worn away in normal use. Hard-facing is done by welding, plating, or spraying a hard material, such as a carbide, on the surface of the tool.
