Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A press with either a mechanically or hydraulically operated ram used in a maintenance shop for a variety of pressing functions.
Industry:Aviation
A press-fit pin used as a pivot in certain types of machinery. A roll pin is made of spring steel sheet rolled into a small, open-sided cylinder. When a roll pin is pressed into a hole slightly smaller than its outside diameter, it squeezes together to fit into the hole. The spring action trying to expand the pin to its normal diameter holds it tightly in the hole.
Industry:Aviation
A pressure control valve used in an aircraft hydraulic system to unload the engine-driven pump when the system pressure reaches a predetermined value. The unloading valve traps the pressure in the pressure manifold, where it is held by the accumulator, and routes the output of the pump back to the reservoir. When the pressure in the manifold drops to a lower predetermined value, the unloading valve directs the pump output back into the pressure manifold.
An unloading valve is also called a system pressure regulator.
Industry:Aviation
A pressure gage that measures the absolute pressure inside the induction system of a reciprocating engine. When the engine is not operating, this instrument shows the existing atmospheric pressure.
Industry:Aviation
A pressure gage used to measure the pressure in the low side of an air conditioning system. A compound gage is calibrated from zero to 30-inches of mercury, negative, and from zero to about 150-pounds-per-square-inch positive pressure.
Industry:Aviation
A pressure measuring instrument made of a glass tube bent into the shape of the letter U. A liquid such as water or mercury is poured into the tube until it is filled to a given level. Either a positive or a negative pressure applied to one end of the tube will cause the liquid to rise in one side of the tube and drop in the other side. The difference in the level of the liquid in the two sides of the tube is proportional to the difference in the pressure at the two ends of the tube.
Industry:Aviation
A pressure measuring instrument that measures pressure referenced from a vacuum.
An aneroid barometer is one of the more accurate types of absolute pressure gages. It measures the changes in the dimensions of an evacuated bellows as it is affected by the pressure of the ambient air.
Industry:Aviation
A pressure relief valve in a hydraulic system that relieves the pressure which builds up when heat expands the fluid. Thermal relief valves are installed in sections of the system in which fluid can be trapped, usually in the lines between the selector valves and the actuators. When fluid in these lines absorbs heat and expands, the thermal relief valve momentarily unseats and releases enough fluid back into the system return manifold to relieve the high pressure and prevent damage to the system.
Industry:Aviation
A pressure relief valve used on containers holding a compressible fluid under pressure. If the pressure inside the container becomes excessive, the safety valve will pop off its seat and relieve the excess pressure.
Industry:Aviation
A pressure vessel in which the air inside can be heated to a high temperature and the pressure raised to a high value.
Autoclaves are used in the composite manufacturing industry to apply heat and pressure to plastic resins. Heat and pressure decrease the amount of time needed to cure plastic resins and improve the quality of the curing process.
