Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A process used to dimple, or indent, the hole into which a flush rivet is to be installed. Some metals, such as magnesium and the harder aluminum alloys, cannot be dimpled cold because they are likely to crack. These metals must be hot dimpled.
Hot dimpling equipment consists of a pair of electrically heated dies with a pilot that goes through the rivet hole. The pilot is passed through the hole, and the heated dies are pressed together. The dies heat the metal enough to soften it and force it into the shape of the die. This is the proper shape for the rivet head.
Industry:Aviation
A process used to heat certain types of nonconductive plastic materials. The material to be heated forms the dielectric, or insulator, of a capacitor, and two metal electrodes act as the plates. Alternating current with a frequency of between 20 and 80 megahertz is placed across the plates.
The material between the plates is heated by the dielectric losses caused by the friction of the molecules moving under the influence of the rapidly changing electrostatic field. Dielectric heating is used to seal bags made of vinyl film and to cure certain types of plastic resins.
Industry:Aviation
A process whereby aircraft are evenly distributed over several available arrival fixes. Fix balancing reduces delays and controller workload.
Industry:Aviation
A product of a chemical reaction in which a metal displaces the hydrogen in an acid. If sulfuric acid (H2SO4) reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and water (H2O) are produced. Sodium sulfate is a salt. The food seasoning called “salt” is sodium chloride (NaCl).
Industry:Aviation
A product that forms when an acid combines with a metal. For example, when hydrochloric acid reacts with zinc, zinc chloride, a salt, forms.
Most chemical salts are porous and powdery and have no strength.
Industry:Aviation
A professional organization that formulates standards for the automotive and aviation industries.
Industry:Aviation
A program approved by the Federal Aviation Administration for the inspection and maintenance of an aircraft that will maintain the aircraft in an airworthy condition.
Industry:Aviation
A program designed to assist in achieving a specified interval over a common point for departures.
Industry:Aviation
A progressive decrease in RPM with load in an engine whose speed is governed with a flyweight-type governor.
As the load is increased, the pilot valve drops down to meter more fuel. The lower position of the valve decreases the compression of the speeder spring and allows the flyweights to assume an onspeed position at a lower RPM.
Industry:Aviation
A projected time calculated for the adapted vertex for each arrival aircraft based upon runway configuration, airport acceptance rate, airport arrival delay period, and other metered arrival aircraft.
TCLT is either the vertex time of arrival (VTA) of the aircraft or the tentative or actual calculated landing time (TCLT/ACLT) of the previous aircraft plus the arrival aircraft interval (AAI), whichever is later. TCLT will be updated in response to the aircraft’s progress and its current relationship to other arrivals.
