A stationary vane that extends chordwise, from the leading edge to the trailing edge, across upper surface of the wing of a high-speed airplane. Fences prevent the air from flowing spanwise along the wing.
Industry:Aviation
A statistical measure of the average length of time between successive system failures.
Industry:Aviation
A steady current that flows from the output of a power supply through a bleeder resistor to ground. Bleeder current improves the voltage regulation of a power supply.
Industry:Aviation
A steel cable used to connect the cockpit control to the flight control surfaces of an aircraft.
Industry:Aviation
A steel cable used to connect the cockpit controls to the control surfaces. Flexible cable is made up of seven strands of wire, with each stand being made up of seven individual wires. This is called 7 x 7 cable. Extra-flexible cable has seven strands, with each strand made of 19 wires, and nonflexible cable is made of either seven or 19 solid wires wound into a cable. “Flight check” (air traffic control). A call-sign prefix used by FAA aircraft engaged in flight inspection/certification of navigational aids and flight procedures.
Industry:Aviation
A steel scale with a projection off of one end of the scale at the zero position. A hook rule is used to measure to the edge of a piece of material that has a radius on its edges.
Industry:Aviation
A steel-gray, highly toxic, nonmetallic chemical element. Selenium’s symbol is Se, its atomic number is 34, and its atomic weight is 78.96. Selenium, which is in the sulfur family, has the useful characteristic of changing its resistance as light falls on it. In the dark, selenium’s resistance is high, but in the bright light, its resistance is low.
Industry:Aviation
A steep descending flight path.
Industry:Aviation
A step in the curing process of a finishing system. The finishing material is thinned with a solvent to get the proper viscosity for spraying. When the finish is sprayed on the surface, it is shiny because of the solvents. These solvents evaporate very soon and leave the surface of the finish dry to the touch, but it is not completely cured. The evaporation of the thinning solvents is called flashing off.
Industry:Aviation
A step in the heat treatment of aluminum alloys in which the metal is removed from the quench bath and allowed to gain its full strength at room temperature. In artificial aging, the metal is held at an elevated temperature for it to gain its full strength in a shorter period of time.
