Selcal system. Selective calling system. Each aircraft operated by an airline is assigned a particular four tone audio combination for identification purposes. A ground station keys the signal whenever contact with that particular aircraft is desired. The signal is decoded by the airborne selcal decoder and the crew alerted by the selcal warning system.

A type of failure of a riveted joint in a sheet metal structure. A joint fails in bearing when the metal tears at the rivet holes before the rivets shear.
Industry:Aviation
A type of failure of an automatic flight control system that produces a steady signal which drives the controls to the extreme end of their travel and holds them there. Hardover failure can result in a crash, and to prevent it, automatic flight control systems have some method of releasing or overpowering the control if such a condition occurs.
Industry:Aviation
A type of finish applied over a varnished surface to be covered with fabric and doped. The dope-proof paint prevents the solvents in the dope from softening the varnish.
Industry:Aviation
A type of finish formed by a special paint in which the surface dries in a series of wrinkles.
The paint used to make a crinkle finish contains special ingredients that cause the surface to partially dry before the paint below the surface dries. As the subsurface paint dries, it shrinks and pulls the surface into a series of wrinkles. Crinkle finish is used on instrument panels to give a tough, attractive finish that does not reflect light.
Industry:Aviation
A type of finish put on some aircraft that are built for show. A show-type finish is usually made up of many coats of dope or lacquer, with much sanding and rubbing of the surface between coats.
Industry:Aviation
A type of finish used on the handle of some metal tools to keep the handle from slipping in your hands. Knurling is done by pressing a special tool against the handle while it is being turned in a lathe.
Industry:Aviation
A type of finishing material that flows out to form a smooth surface. Enamel is normally made of a pigment suspended in some form of resin. When the resin hardens, it leaves a smooth, protective surface that may have either a glossy or a velvet finish.
Polyurethane enamel is an exceptionally durable, chemical-resistant finish used on modern aircraft.
Industry:Aviation
A type of finishing system defect in which small, local areas of the finish do not cure properly. These small areas resemble the eyes of a fish.
Fisheyes are caused by small specks of wax or silicone material on the surface when the finish was sprayed on, or by contaminants that fell on the finish before it cured.
