The component in a vapor-cycle air conditioning system in which the refrigerant absorbs heat from the aircraft cabin.
The refrigerant in the evaporator coils is a liquid in the form of tiny droplets. Warm air from the cabin blows through the fins on the coils, and heat from this air is absorbed by the refrigerant, changing the droplets of liquid into a vapor. The heat used to make this change is taken from the air and as a result the air passing through the evaporator is cooled.
Industry:Aviation
The component in a vapor-cycle air conditioning system in which the refrigerant gives up the heat it picked up as it passed through the evaporator.
This heat is given up to the air flowing through the fins around the condenser tubing. When the refrigerant gives up its heat, it changes state, or condenses from a gas into a liquid.
Industry:Aviation
The component in a vapor-cycle cooling system in which the low-pressure refrigerant vapors, after they leave the evaporator, are compressed to increase both their temperature and pressure before they pass into the condenser. Increasing the temperature of the refrigerant allows it to give up some of its heat energy to the air flowing through the condenser.
Some compressors are driven by electric motors, others by hydraulic motors and, in the case of many light airplanes, are belt driven from the engine.
Industry:Aviation
The component in a vapor-cycle cooling system that meters the refrigerant into the evaporator. The amount of refrigerant metered by the thermostatic expansion valve, or TXV, is determined by the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant as it leaves the evaporator coils. The TXV changes the refrigerant from a high-pressure liquid into a spray of low-pressure liquid.
Industry:Aviation
The component in an air-cycle cooling system that includes the expansion turbine and the compressor.
Industry:Aviation
The component in an automatic pilot system that allows the human pilot to direct the aircraft to hold a specified heading and/or altitude or to couple to one or more of the navigation radios for cruise flight or for a landing approach. Other controls allow the pilot to command a turn, and to trim the aircraft about any of its three axes.
Industry:Aviation
The component in an electric motor or generator through which current flows into and out of the armature. Brushes used in generators are made of a carbon compound, and they slide over the surface of the copper commutator bars. Current induced into the armature windings is brought out of the windings through the brushes.
Starter motor bushes which must carry large amounts of current are often made of a copper alloy.
Industry:Aviation
The component in the valve train of a reciprocating engine that rides on the lobes of the cam shaft or cam ring and pushes against the pushrod. A tappet is called a cam follower. In many reciprocating engines, the tappet incorporates a hydraulic valve lifter that automatically adjusts for the changes in the length of the valve train mechanism caused by temperature changes.
Industry:Aviation
The component of a transmitted electromagnetic wave that travels from the transmitting antenna along the surface of the earth.
Industry:Aviation
The components in an axial-flow compressor which consist of one set of rotor blades and the following set of stator blades.
Axial-flow compressors have a number of stages of compression. Each stage consists of rotor blades to increase the velocity of the air and stator blades to convert the velocity energy into pressure.
