The force acting about the longitudinal axis of a propeller blade which tries to rotate the blade to a low-pitch angle.
Industry:Aviation
The force moment, acting about the longitudinal axis of a propeller blade, which tries to rotate the blade toward a low-pitch angle. As the engine rotates the propeller, centrifugal force tries to flatten the blade so all of its mass rotates in the same plane.
Centrifugal twisting moment (CTM) opposes aerodynamic twisting moment (ATM), but normally CTM is the greater. The resultant of these two twisting moments is a force on a rotating propeller that tries to move the blades toward a low-pitch angle.
Industry:Aviation
The force of attraction between objects. The force of gravity is directly proportional to the mass of the objects (the greater the mass, the stronger the pull of gravity), and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the objects (the farther apart the objects, the weaker the pull of gravity).
Industry:Aviation
The force that causes electrons to move from one atom to another within an electrical circuit. An EMF is the difference in the electrical pressure, or potential, that exists between two points, and can be produced by converting mechanical, chemical, light, or heat energy into electrical energy. The basic unit of electromotive force is the volt.
Industry:Aviation
The force used in pressure carburetors and certain fuel injection systems to determine the amount of fuel to be metered into the engine.
The air metering force is a balance between ram air pressure picked up by impact tubes and a low pressure produced in a venturi.
Industry:Aviation
The force within a body that opposes centrifugal force as the body rotates or spins. Centripetal force acts inside a piece of rotating machinery and tries to pull the rotating object in toward the center of its rotation.
Industry:Aviation
The form in which carbon exists in steel. The amount of iron carbide and its distribution in the metal determine the hardness of the steel.
Industry:Aviation
The form of alternating current produced by a generator with three sets of windings. The three windings are arranged in such a way that the current and voltage in each winding is 120 electrical degrees out of phase with the current and voltage in either of the other two windings.
The three windings can be connected in either a delta or a Y-arrangement. In a delta connection, the three windings are connected in series. The voltage across any one of the three windings is the same as that across the other windings. The total current is 1.73 times the current through any of the individual windings.
In a Y-connected three-phase circuit, one end of each of the windings is connected to a common neutral point. The voltage across any two windings is 1.73 times the voltage between any single winding and the neutral point. The current through any two windings is the same as the current through any single winding.
Industry:Aviation
The form of electricity which makes use of the heat and/or the magnetic field produced when electrons flow in a conductor.
Industry:Aviation
The form of ignition used in diesel engines. Air inside the cylinder of the engine is compressed, and the compression heats the air enough that when fuel is sprayed into it, the fuel ignites and burns.
