društvena semiotika
Dok se neki semiotičari strukturalistički bave formalnim sistemima (fokusirajući se na detaljne studije narativa, filma, televizije i slično), većina se više bavi društvenom semiotikom. Društveni semiotičari se pre svega bave praksama signifikacije u određenim društveno-kulturalnim kontekstima. Društveni semiotilari prihvataju da nisu sve stvarnosti jednake i zanimaju se za mesta gde se stvarnosti sudaraju. Koreni socijalne semiotike se nalaze kod ranih teoretičara. Sosir je sam smatrao semiotiku za "nauku koja se bavi životom znakova unutar društva".
