Sarah Burke

Sarah Burke (September 3, 1982 – January 19, 2012) was a pioneering Canadian freestyle skier, who helped get superpipe accepted into the Olympics. She was a four-time Winter X Games gold medalist, and won the world championship in the halfpipe in 2005.

On January 10, 2012, Burke crashed on the same halfpipe in Park City, Utah where snowboarder Kevin Pearce sustained a traumatic brain injury during a training accident in 2009. She died nine days later from irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest.
